  “More than diplomacy, less than marriage. Two lands, two leaders, one embassy, out here under the stars. You know I will fight for you, should it come to that,” I said.

  “And I for you, and my wolves and my people. You have my word, and when we can steal time, you have me,” Valor said.

  I lifted her easily, and her legs went around me like vines. Walking to the bed, I heard the distant call of her wolves, and then the night washed back in around us, silent but fragrant. When I lowered her to the bed, she twined her arms around my neck, smiling. Her hands were busy on my body, and I felt my skin stipple under her touch.

  “It looks like I’m about to become an expert thief of time,” I said, bending my head to her. “And a highly motivated one at that.”

  “We both are. Now hush, and claim your loot.” Her mouth ended all talk, and then it was just us, racing against the dawn.
